Nine Years

A couple of months ago, in anticipation of her birthday, Sweet M made this drawing. It's short a few candles — since she's just turned nine — but don't you love the symmetry of it, and the flatness? And that cheery cherry topping it off?

Hi again Mother's Vox,

This isn't really a comment but I'm not sure how to e-mail you directly. I'm writing because an exchange we had a couple of weeks ago inspired me to finally get my blogsite up and running more to the design I've had in mind for years. (The address is slightly different from when you viewed it: www.specialfocusblog@blogspot.com.)

So for one, I'd like to post a link to your blog on my site. I've already added it in so you can see it if you go to the site, but I'm happy to remove it if you don't want it there.

The second issue is one I can't really address in the comments section. I wonder if I can have an e-mail discussion with you about anonymity. Special ed is such a darned small subculture and I worry about repercussions of, for instance, my daughter's school id'ing my blog. Your writings strike me as activist just for your honest criticism of Sweet M's school. A lot of my essays deal with very personal issues, which could end up offending not only my daughter's school but friends and family as well. I wonder what kind of decisions you've made along the way in publicizing your views.

Thanks everyone. She had a great birthday -- got the Pokemon Red something or other Gameboy game, so was totally thrilled. And she had a cake, and worked on planning her party, which will be late this year!

Special focus, please feel free to email me. I have been thinking a great deal about anonymity, privacy, and the politics of silence, and I will probably post about it shortly, but I would also be happy to email with you. I will see if your email address is in the email box where I get my comments sent, and if it is, I'll email you from there. Don't really want to post the email address, because we're getting enough spam as it is!
